Lanes per player
Instead of there always being four lanes, what if the lanes depended on the number of players. If there was only two players there would only be two bigger lanes. Three players the space would be split between the three lanes. And so on and so forth.

More time to get ready
By the time I finally get my two preschoolers in their places for the game I always seem to miss the opening oppurtunity to join in with them.
